Abstract

Indonesia's cash waqf potential is estimated to reach 180 trillion rupiah per year, but the collection realization rate is still below 1.3 percent. This study examines the extent to which digital Islamic banking can bridge this gap by strengthening the cash waqf participation of Muslim students in Indonesia, and examines the mediating role of digital literacy in this relationship. A structured questionnaire was administered to 400 Muslim students from universities in five regions of Indonesia. This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional survey design. The structured questionnaire was administered to 400 students from universities in five regions in Indonesia. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) through SmartPLS 4.0. Three main findings emerged. First, digital Islamic banking has a significant positive effect on cash waqf participation (β = 0.532, p < 0.001). Second, digital Islamic banking improves students' digital literacy (β = 0.487, p < 0.001). Third, higher digital literacy is associated with greater cash waqf participation (β = 0.383, p < 0.001). Digital literacy serves as a partial mediator, accounting for 26 percent of the total effect, operating through ease of direct transactions and increased digital capabilities. The structural model explains 63.4 percent of the variance in waqf participation. A critical gap is found between donation intentions (mean 3.67) and actual donation behavior (mean 2.34). These findings enrich theory by demonstrating that the application of technology in Islamic finance involves both instrumental utility and capacity building dimensions. Practical implications include the integration of waqf features into banking applications and the implementation of campus-based digital literacy programs to maximize the potential for waqf mobilization in Indonesia.
