Abstract

This study aims to analyze the stages of the turun pompong tradition as a coastal culture on Mantang Island, identify the character education values within it, and analyze the internalization process of these values from an ethnopedagogical perspective. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design on Mantang Island, Bintan Regency. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of students, educators, community leaders, and boat craftsmen. Data analysis techniques were carried out qualitatively descriptively through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results show that the turun pompong tradition is a ritual of the coastal Malay community in launching a new boat which includes six stages, namely physical inspection of the pompong, preparation for the feast, prayer together, eating together, sprinkling green bean porridge, and the procession of pushing the pompong into the sea. The dominant character values found include religiousness, hard work, mutual cooperation, social care, communicativeness, love of the homeland, discipline, and responsibility. The internalization process takes place socioculturally through observation, active participation, cultural reflection, and social habituation. This study concludes that the turun pompong tradition has strategic potential as an ethnopedagogical medium and contextual learning resource to strengthen the maritime identity and character of the younger generation in the archipelagic region.
